Dr. Raichi puts devices on Earth that emit Destron Gas and destroy all life. When Mr. Popo finds out that only a few hours are left until the planet’s destruction, Goku, Gohan, Vegeta, Future Trunks, and Piccolo rush to destroy the evil devices located around the planet. They manage to destroy all but one that is protected by an impenetrable energy barrier. However, Frieza, Cooler, Turles and Lord Slug appear and engage the heroes in individual fight. It is revealed by King Kai that the villains are ghost warriors, and will continually come back to life when killed unless defeated in the same way their lives were originally ended. The heroes track Dr. Raichi down to the Dark Planet and engage him, discovering that his ghost warriors are generated by a machine called Hachihyaku, a device powered by the hate of the Tuffles. It is also revealed that Dr. Raichi is a ghost warrior himself, generated by Hachihyaku. When Vegeta vaporizes Raichi, preventing him from re-materializing, the hate Dr. Raichi had causes Hachihyaku to exceed its limit. Hachihyaku appears in a powerful android body, whose power is said to match or perhaps even exceed Broly’s, according to Goku. Hachihyaku devastates the heroes until the Saiyans, after having transformed into their Super Saiyan states, combine their powers together into one massive wave of energy, ending the threat of the ghost warriors.
The Namekian Ocean continues to flood into the gigantic crater created by Goku’s Spirit Bomb. So far, only Gohan and Krillin are known to have survived the blast’s shockwave, but while neither can sense Goku or Piccolo’s presence, they are confident that both have survived. Soon enough, a tired Piccolo emerges from the ocean, pulling Goku out as well. Gohan and Krillin come to greet them, disappointed that they cannot reach them faster, what with their loss in strength. But with Frieza finally defeated, it is but a minor price to pay for being reunited with their allies.
As the group reflects upon what just happened, they are all able to agree that they will be glad to finally come home. Krillin seems to be the most ecstatic, talking about wanting to be married after everything that has happened to him, to which everyone else just laughs.
On King Kai’s planet, King Kai reports to the others that Frieza has finally been defeated. Using this fact to boost their morale, the dead fighters are able to overcome the dead Ginyu Force members. Tien is able to push both Jeice and Burter into Hell’s Bloody Pond. The same goes for Yamcha with Recoome. The only member left to take care of is Guldo, who is easily taken care of by Chiaotzu. In Hell, ogres Goz and Mez try to tell the Ginyus that escaping the place is impossible, but the group cannot be discouraged. The three attempt to fly out of the place, only to hit an invisible barrier. They are then sent crashing back down by the fourth member, Guldo, who has finally come to join them. King Kai then congratulates the fighters, but admits that he actually made a deal with King Yama to have the Ginyus sent to his planet as a form of training for the others. Yamcha, Tien and Chiaotzu can only stare at him in amazement as he then cracks another bad joke.
Back on Namek, Goku tells the others that with the spaceship he used to arrive on the planet, they can come back to Earth in five days. It looks like everything is back to normal until Freeza gives a worrisome shriek. The others are worried as well until Krillin tells them that he is only worried because they forgot about Bulma being on the planet as well. In some cases, she can be even scarier than Frieza. After another laugh, Piccolo says that with Frieza gone, the dead inhabitants of Planet Namek can finally rest in peace, including the Great Namek Elder. Still unaware that Piccolo fused with Nail, Krillin is about to question how Piccolo knew about the Grand Elder when he senses someone else in the area. A look of true terror has come over Krillin’s face. The others turn their gaze to see just what he is looking at. Another body has emerged from the Namekian Ocean: Frieza.
Spending no time at all, Frieza sends a shot aimed for Goku. However, Piccolo shoves him out of harm’s way just in time. But this act of kindness was at a price; Piccolo has been shot straight in the chest. With his friend and mentor dead in front of him, Gohan cries out in sadness. King Kai is just as surprised at Frieza’s appearance as the others.
Frieza begins to speak, saying how even he was unsure whether he would survive Goku’s Spirit Bomb. Gohan and Krillin are taken aback in fear. Goku, on the other hand, quickly tells the others that they must escape on his spaceship without him. Gohan, however, wishes to stay behind and avenge Piccolo’s death. To this, Goku becomes enraged, ordering his son to escape while he still can. Frieza, however, has different plans for them, using his psychic powers to levitate Krillin into the air. The others have no time to react, as Krillin screams for help just before exploding. Now only two heroes remain.
As Frieza gives a maniacal laugh, something overcomes Goku. Pebbles begin to levitate around him as he clenches his fists in anger. For a brief moment, his hair stands on end. Goku has become angry before, but this is something else entirely. Finally, with one defiant scream, Goku transforms. His hair is completely standing on end, as if being raised by his own aura, his hair has become gold and his eyes have turned a shade of green. While he still has some control over himself, Goku orders Gohan to take Piccolo with him and escape on his spaceship. Sensing his stamina, Piccolo is still alive, but just barely. Just exactly what is this sudden transformation?
